Sclerotherapy in Naperville, IL
Sclerotherapy is an excellent treatment to reduce unsightly spider and reticular veins on legs. This non-invasive treatment is most often performed on the upper and lower legs to improve the vascular appearance of the skin. There is no downtime and minimal discomfort and risk. It is the perfect treatment for those wanting a more even skin complexion on their legs while still enjoying their regular daily activities.
Sclerotherapy FAQ
What is the treatment like? How does it feel?
Treatments are approximately 15-60 minutes depending on the extent of the treatment area. Your skin will be cleansed prior to beginning the treatment. A solution will be inserted into each vessel following the network of the unwanted spider and reticular veins. Although the treatment is tolerable, most clients assimilate the feel of sclerotherapy to a dull stinging and burning sensation in the skin. This feeling only lasts during the treatment session. To reduce discomfort, clients may take up to 1000 mg of acetaminophen 30-minutes prior to treatment and up to four times a day. Topical anesthetic will not reduce the discomfort of the procedure, as it is deep and not superficial. Once complete, the skin will feel and appear warm like a blushing sensation. The treated area will be cleansed again. You may go about your regular daily activities, avoiding excessive sun exposure and excessive exercise.
How does the treatment work?
The veins that most individuals want removed are called spider (tiny red/purplish veins) and reticular (larger blue veins) veins, a complex network of tissue that extend from the deeper vascular structures of the body. Treating spider and reticular veins with sclerotherapy does not cause trauma to the deeper vascular structures (although deep sclerotherapy is also a treatment option for deeper veins, we do not provide this service in our office). Each vein is individually treated, although due to the vast network, some veins may dissolve by treating another branch of the same network. As the injection takes place the vein’s walls become sticky and close. Gradually the tissue dissipates within the body, leaving a more even skin complexion.
Treatments are generally recommended in a series of 3-8 sessions, performed 3-4 weeks apart for optimal results. Some clients may require more treatments.
Veins can rebuild themselves, or new extensions of deeper vessels may develop. Maintenance treatments are recommended based on the development of these veins.
What equipment/product do you use?

Where on the body can the treatments be performed?
Sclerotherapy is most commonly performed on the upper and lower legs.
What is the pre-treatment care?
Please follow the recommended skincare regimen as directed by your Consultation Coordinator or Provider. Please discuss with your Provider if any medications or supplements need to be discontinued prior to care as well.
What is the post-treatment care?
Please follow the recommended skincare regimen as directed by your Consultation Coordinator or Provider. Compression hose are often recommended to provide pressure on the area for faster results. As we do not want to create a dramatic change in vascular pressure, it is not recommended to fly or scuba dive for a week following each treatment. Additionally, avoid sun exposure for two weeks following each treatment as you will be more sun sensitive and could compromise the results of the treatment. Avoid excessive exercise for a few days following each treatment.
Please note, the treated veins and the tissue surrounding may appear darker or purplish/blue in color during the reabsorption phase. This may appear to look like a bruise in the area. Topical use of arnica Montana or vitamin K gels may help with resolving these pigments faster.
Who are the best candidates?
The best candidates for this procedure are those with early signs of spider and reticular veins who desire a healthier, more youthful appearance. Those candidates should also have realistic expectations and be committed to improving their skin and maintaining results under the direction of a skincare professional. Please note this procedure is not recommended for pregnant women.
Can all skin types be treated?
All skin types can be treated with sclerotherapy.
What results are expected?
With a series of 2-6 treatments, provided at the recommended intervals, one should expect an overall improvement in the reduction of their veins.
When can you expect the results?
Results gradually develop with each treatment.
After treatment, the skin will continue to age. It is important to follow a healthy lifestyle to prevent new vein development in addition to receiving maintenance treatments to maintain results. Please consult with your Consultation Coordinator or Provider for the most effective plan for your goals.
We measure results based on the goals of the consultation and with clinical photography. Your Consultation Coordinator and/or Provider will assess your results throughout your treatment program. Photos of the treatment area will be taken prior to your first treatment and at the completion of the program. Additional photographs may be taken as needed.
What are things to consider in choosing to have this treatment? Are there potential risks or side effects?
