Blue Seas Med Spa is the Premier Choice for Dermal Fillers in Glen Ellyn

before   after

Dermal Fillers are an excellent treatment option to create a youthful face specifically reducing unwanted facial folds and wrinkles and defining and/or plumping areas of volume loss. Dermal Fillers, Voluma®, Juvederm®, Belotero®, and Radiesse® brands are most often performed in the lines around the mouth that separate the mouth area from the cheek area (nasolabial folds) and the lines from the mouth to the chin (marionette lines), the lips, depressions under the eyes, around the temples, and under the cheek bones. There is minimal downtime, discomfort and risk. It is the perfect treatment for those wanting more youthful facial features while still enjoying their regular daily activities.

What does a dermal filler treatment feel like?

Treatments are approximately 15-60 minutes depending on the treatment area. Your skin will be cleansed prior to beginning the treatment. A very fine needle will gently be inserted into the skin and the product will be placed. This process will repeat in each area that the Provider feels is necessary to meet your goals, while creating a naturally enhanced look. Although the treatment is tolerable, most clients assimilate the feel of Dermal Fillers to a small pinch and swelling of the skin. This feeling only lasts during the treatment application. Most of the products used are mixed with lidocaine to reduce discomfort which takes affect within minutes of the treatment (please alert your provider if you have an allergy to lidocaine). For those with sensitive skin, a small ice pack pillow or cold air will be applied to the skin immediately prior to reduce discomfort. Once complete, the areas treated may appear swollen with a small pinprick mark at each injection site. Your skin will be cleansed again and skincare will be applied. You may apply makeup immediately following and go about your regular daily activities, avoiding excessive sun exposure.

How does the treatment work?

Nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, and depressions under the eyes, around the temples and under the cheek bones are due to a loss of volume underneath the skin and within the skin over time. With age, fat is lost in the face, and collagen and elastin break down their bonds that keep the skin firm. This results in a deflated and sagging appearance. The most common method to replace this volume is by providing a substitute “filler” to the area to plump the skin back up. Ingredients similar to the natural properties of the skin are injected within and around the areas where the volume is lost. The ingredient most commonly used is hyaluronic acid, which is the main substance that makes up the space between the collagen and elastin in the skin. Voluma®, Juvederm®, and Belotero® are the trade names of products developed with this ingredient. The hyaluronic acid in the skin binds to the new hyaluronic acid filler and plumps or “volumizes” the depressions, lines and folds in the skin. When hyaluronic acid is used, it stays in place, commonly lasts up to 12 months, or 18 months with a touchup treatment at 6 months. The volume effect is immediate and natural. Because the ingredient is hydrophilic, it also brings water in the skin to the area resulting in some mild swelling that may be present for a few hours to days after treatment.

Where on the face and body can the treatments be performed?

Dermal Fillers are most commonly performed in the lines around the mouth that separate the mouth area from the cheek area (nasolabial folds) and the lines from the mouth to the chin (marionette lines), the lips, depressions under the eyes, around the temples, and under the cheek bones. Occasionally fillers may also be performed in ear lobes, and on the back of hands to increase volume.

What is the pre-treatment care?

Please follow the recommended instructions and skincare regimen as directed by your Consultation Coordinator or Provider.

Although it most likely will not cause side effects, we do not recommend this treatment be performed on sun burnt skin. This includes tanning beds. Sun exposure will make the skin sensitive that could increase risk for potential side effects. Daily use of sunblock with SPF30 or higher will assist in reducing sun exposure, but will not do enough if you are regularly outside. If your skin is compromised, your provider may delay your treatment to a later date to reduce risk of side effects.

Individuals who want to reduce the risk of bruising may apply Arnica Montana or vitamin K to the treatment area for 3-5 days prior to treatment.

To reduce discomfort with treatment, some individuals may choose to apply topical anesthetic for 30 minutes prior to treatment.

What is the post-treatment care?

Apply ice packs to reduce swelling post treatment. Individuals who want to treat bruising may apply arnica Montana or vitamin K to the treatment area for 3-5 days after treatment. Do not massage or manipulate the treated areas unless directed by your Provider. Please follow the recommended post-treatment instructions and skincare regimen as directed by your Consultation Coordinator or Provider. Additionally, avoid sun exposure for two weeks following each treatment as you will be more sun sensitive and could compromise the results of the treatment.

Who are the best candidates?

The best candidates for this procedure are those with early signs of aging skin who desire a healthier, more youthful appearance. Those candidates should also have realistic expectations and be committed to improving their skin and maintaining results under the direction of a skincare professional. Please note this procedure is not recommended for pregnant women.

Can all skin types be treated?

All skin types can be treated with Dermal Fillers.

What results are expected?

Although you will see results with each treatment, with consistent treatments, proper sun exposure and skin care, one should expect an impressive overall improvement in the appearance of their skin, including a smoother texture, with minimal wrinkles and defined contour in the areas treated.

When can I expect the results?

Results with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are immediate, although mild swelling may delay final appearance for a few days. The degree of result is dependent upon how much product is used at each treatment. The length of result is dependent upon how fast or slow your body absorbs the product typically 6-18 months.

After treatment, the skin will continue to age. It is important to follow a healthy skin care regimen to prevent new wrinkles and sun damage in addition to receiving maintenance services. Please consult with your Consultation Coordinator or Provider for the best effective plan for your skin care goals.

We measure results based on the goals of the consultation and with clinical photography. Your Consultation Coordinator and/or Provider will assess your results throughout your treatment program. Photos of the treatment area will be taken prior to your first treatment and at the completion of the program. Additional photographs may be taken as needed.

What are things to consider in choosing to have this treatment? Are there potential risks or side effects?

Slight discomfort is associated with the treatment, similar to a pinch and swelling of the skin. The skin will feel and may appear swollen for up to a few days after treatment. There is minimal downtime with each treatment, although side effects are possible.

With any injectable treatment, there are potential side effects. Minimizing sun exposure before and after treatment minimizes risk of side effects. There are also certain medications and supplements that can cause you to be more sensitive and could affect the results of the treatment. You must advise your Consultation Coordinator and Provider of any changes in medical history.

Side effects can include:

  • erythema (or redness/flushing) of the skin for up to 48 hours following treatment
  • edema (swelling)
  • infection and scars
  • bruising
  • tenderness to touch
  • staining of the skin (superficial dilation of vessels that can be improved with laser treatment)
  • lumpiness to touch (temporary effect)
  • granulomas
  • cold sores (if you are already prone to Herpes Simplex Virus in the treated area)
